The Yang-Mills gradient flow in non-abelian gauge theories

The Yang-Mills gradient flow is a recent addition by Martin Luscher to the arsenal of techniques used in the study of non-abelian gauge theories. After introducing the concept in a pedagogical manner I will use the gradient flow to define a new running coupling scheme in finite volume. This new scheme is then used to calculate the beta-function of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to Nf = 4 flavors of fundamental fermions. The calculation is non-perturbative and is done by lattice discretization. A careful and controlled continuum limit is taken at the end.
