Chiral conformal field theory is a kind of quantum field theory and we have two mathematical axiomatizations. One is based on operator algebras and related to the Jones theory of subfactors. The other is a theory of vertex operator algebras and started with the Moonshine conejcture relating the Monster group and the elliptic modular function. The two theories have much similarities between them, and we now directly relate them explicitly for the first time.
