The interest of the notion of action in physics and how an action is implemented in noncommutative geometry will first be outlined. Then, the necessary tools to compute the spectral action will be given as the pseudo-differential calculus, the noncommutative integral, the ζ-functions. Few steps on the way to get an asymptotic expansion of the action like the heat kernel method will be described. The whole will be surrounded by the state of the art on the known, classical, almost classical and purely noncommutative examples.
