Resolving the proton spin crisis with lattice Quantum Chromodynamics

Understanding of the fundamental properties of the proton, the most abundant particle in the visible universe, has been a major endeavour of strong interaction physics.
We overview recent progress in lattice QCD simulations and explain how fundamental properties of hadrons can be investigated within this formalism.
In particular, we focus on the determination of the distribution of spin and momentum among the constituents of the proton, resolving
a three-decade old puzzle.
