Several new people have arrived at CP3-Origins in the recent months.
Zhi-Wei is a postdoc based at the University of Waterloo in Canada. His research focuses on quantum field theories, both for pure theory and phenomenology. He is particularly interested in asymptotic safety and symmetry breaking patterns.
Nick is a PhD student who will be working primarily with Heidi Rzehak. His research interests are focused around, any and all BSM physics. He has worked with and most likely will be pursuing the phenomenology of supersymmetric theories and in particular the Higgs sector therein, with specific interests including higher-order corrections to the lightest neutral Higgs mass, or effective theories with extended Higgs sectors that might be used to explain the observed mass hierarchies in the Standard Model.
Johannes König started at CP3 as a PhD student with Claudia Hagedorn on November 1. The topic of Johannes’ PhD project is the role of flavor in theory and phenomenology. In particular, he is working on extensions of the Standard Model that can explain the observed pattern of fermion masses and mixing and the striking differences between the quark and the lepton sectors. He is also studying solutions to the so-called flavor problem that arises in many weakly as well as strongly coupled BSM theories. In addition, he will explore different phenomenological aspects in astroparticle physics, like signals of Dark Matter in (in)direct detection experiments, with emphasis on flavor.
Nicola Dondi arrived in December and will be working as a PhD student, primarily with Francesco Sannino. He got his B.Sc. in Physics in 2014 and his M.Sc. in Physics in 2016 at the University of Ferrara, Italy. In his Master thesis, under the supervision of professors Alessandro Drago and Giuseppe Pagliara, he worked on an effective three-flavour chiral model for quarks at low temperature and high density regimes that includes quark confinement and supports the stability of strange quark matter. Such kind of matter is conjectured to constitute a new kind of compact object, the Quark Star, and has been proposed as a candidate for Dark Matter. Nicola is now interested in strongly coupled quantum field theories as well as BSM physics and Higgs sector.
Andrea Palessandro came to CP3-Origins in January and began his PhD studies under the supervision of Martin Sloth. Andrea graduated with honours (110/110 cum laude) from the University of Salerno with a BSc in physics and a thesis on the standard model of cosmology and the cosmological constant problem. He then moved to Trieste, where he earned his MSc in theoretical physics cum laude, specializing in cosmology and quantum field theory. He completed his internship at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, where he worked with Dr. Roberto Valandro on the thesis project: the moduli stabilisation and computation of the moduli masses in an explicit type IIB string theory compactification in the LARGE volume scenario, resulting in a de Sitter vacuum with a small and positive cosmological constant and an exponentially large volume. Besides string theory, Andrea is extremely interested in any aspect of fundamental physics, from cosmology to particle physics.
Our most recent addition is Jonas Petersen who began a 4+4 year PhD position with Mads Toudal Frandsen as part of the DFF Sapere Aude Starting Grant ‘The Origin of Mass and the Particle Nature of Dark Matter’ on February 2. Jonas did his bachelor in Technical Science at SDU TEK and his master in particle physics at SDU. He is previously the recipient of a Peter and Emma Thomsens scholarship and the winner of the 2011 EAL Cup. His project will be focused on determining the particle nature of Dark Matter
