Lattice field theory with world-lines and world-sheets

When on introduces a chemical potential most field theories have a complex action S. For a Monte Carlo simulation in the lattice discretization this poses a serious problem, since the Boltzmann factor exp(-S) cannot be used as a probability in a stochastic process. In recent years several lattice field theories were exactly rewritten in terms of world-lines and world-sheets such that the new representation has a partition sum with only real and positive contributions and Monte Carlo simulations are possible also at finite chemical potential. In my talk I review the progress that was made within this approach and discuss new ideas and concepts for world-line and world-sheet representations for non-abelian theories. I will furthermore try to outline the possible potential of the new representations for questions beyond the application in Monte Carlo simulations.
