In a Wilsonian approach, effects from physics manifest at high-energy scales are described at low energies by effective couplings involving operators with canonical dimension larger than four. I will focus on four-fermion operators, and discuss the relevance of their renormalisation group running for extensions of the Standard Model. Explicit examples will be discussed concerning corrections to flavour physics, and strong-coupling models of electroweak symmetry breaking.
