An introductory lecture on skyrmions and their role in QCD. The lecture will be given on the blackboard; no prior knowledge apart from basic quantum field theory is expected from the audience.

    topology of the vacuum; domain walls, monopoles and skyrmions; Derrick’s theorem
  • The Skyrme model:
    non-linear sigma model and winding number; Bogomolny bound; hedgehog ansatz; skyrmion mass and radius; multiple skyrmions configurations
