I shall first describe the observational evidence for the existence of magnetic fields on cosmological scales. I discuss two possibilities for their generation in the primordial Universe: cosmological phase transitions and inflation. We then study the evolution of magnetic fields in the expanding Universe and the imprints they may leave on the cosmic microwave background. I shall also work out the main differences between the generation mechanisms and how to distinguish between them by observations.
